Artists Statement
Mỗi chiếc bình bắt đầu từ một đoạn văn ngắn, như một mảnh ký ức hay suy tưởng dẫn dắt quá trình hình thành hình dáng và bề mặt gốm. Tác phẩm được làm trong nhiều ngày, bằng kỹ thuật cuộn tay truyền thống, nhưng được biến tấu theo hướng đương đại với những dải đất mỏng manh, được véo và nắn tỉ mỉ. Gần gũi và chính xác, mỗi bề mặt là một bản ghi tinh tế của từng chuyển động tay trong quá trình tạo tác. Không có gì bị che giấu hay làm nhẵn đi: không ở đường nối, không ở vành miệng, cũng không ở đáy nơi chiếc bình từng chạm vào bàn xoay.
Trong khoảng trống giữa ý định và sự tạo hình là nơi ý nghĩa được lưu lại.
At the intersection of craft and narrative, gốm maker is the material expression of a writing practice.
Each vessel begins with a fragment of text, guiding the slow development of ceramic form and surface. The work is built over days, using traditional coiling techniques rendered contemporary through the use of excessively thin, pinched coils. Intimate and precise, the work is a surface that record contact every single hand movement in the making process. Nothing is hidden or smoothed away: not in the seam, not at the rim, not on the base where the pot met the banding wheel.
It is in the space between intention and creation that meaning lingers.
ARTIST BIO
Thannie Phan (b. Kien Giang, Vietnam) is the artist behind gốm maker, a ceramic practice shaped by her experiences in Sai Gon, Singapore, Auckland, Gadigal Country (Sydney), and Naarm (Melbourne), where she currently resides.
